Volunteers Power Us!

Friends of the Lexington Main Library is completely run by volunteers.  Our volunteers give monetarily through yearly membership fees, but those are not the only donations a member can make.  The FLML love it when members share their time and ideas too.

We invite you to tell us what we should do next.  We are all about making Lexington the best place to live.  If you have an idea, we need you to share it.  FLML gets most excited when a volunteer comes up with an idea and wants to head up the team that brings it to life.

Tell your teens too!  The girls and boys that have given us an hour or two of their time have made a huge difference, and they were able to use us to satisfy service hour requirements for their various extracurricular activities.  Click below to learn more and be added to our volunteer team!

    Volunteering Your Time

You know any event, program, or initiative takes people willing to show up and make it happen. There are plenty of opportunities to do this as a Friend.

We’d love for you to show up for:

    • Commitment-free times. Let’s Be Friends meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 9:30 am. This is a no-commitment, drop-in volunteering opportunity. Each month, FLML will have a service project ready along with any supplies needed.

    • One-Time Events. Each event we host is run by volunteers. We like to build our volunteer base for each event. Check out specific opportunities by visiting our Sign-up to Help sheet.

    • Regular needs. The Book Sale and the Book By Book Program run yearly. This means we need folks to show up regularly to help makes these happen. We’d love for you to join the team for either the Book Sales or the Book By Book Program. Once you supply your email, you will get details sent directly to your inbox.

You can also check out our Book By Book Page.

    Volunteering by Donationing

Just like each event, program, or initiative takes people, it also takes resources. The yearly membership fee adds to the FLML annual budget and is used to provide these resources, but we will utilize any extra resources too! The Friends are pleased to accept monetary donations or gently used fiction, nonfiction, and children’s materials. We cannot currently accept encyclopedias, textbooks, music CDs or VHS tapes.

We’d love for you to further donate:

    • Small Amounts. Small donations are accepted any time the library is open by dropping them off at the main circulation desk.

    • Larger Amounts. If your donations are more than you can carry to the front desk in one trip, we ask that you bring those to the library’s rear double doors between 9 am-5 pm any Monday-Friday. Truck load sized donations require calling ahead to arrange for receiving: 803.920.2437.

    • Monetarily. We are happy to accept extra funds at any time. The Friends of the Lexington Main Library is committed to fundraising for your Main Library. When the next wonderful idea is ready to launch or the next event is being planned, we want to make sure the money is available to meet the need fully.

    Volunteering Your Ideas

As mentioned above, we need people to carry out each and every event, program, or initiative. However, it is often overlooked that every event, program, or initiative must be first thought of and then led. Do you have ideas? Are you talented in an area?

We’d love for you to share your ideas and talents by:

    • Suggesting future events, programs, or initiatives. Who knows better what a community wants or needs than the members of that community? Not everyone has an idea, but we’d love to hear from those of you that do!

    • Leading future events, programs, or initiatives. We especially love it when someone is willing to lead a team as they bring the next idea to life!

    • Donating Services or Offering Discounted Services. Are you a local artist or business owner? Let us know the services you’re willing to donate to the FLML. We will let you know when those services are needed.

    Volunteering in Other Ways

Over the years we’ve noticed that many people are unaware of who we are and what we do. Now that you know, we’d love for you to spread the word. FLML is committed to serving our ENTIRE community, which is beautifully diverse. We want our Friends to be just as diverse, so we want Friends of all ages, beliefs, genders, and parts of Lexington. We understand that we’ll better serve Lexington by being a large group that represents all walks of life.

We’d love for you to spread the word by:

    • Inviting Others. Whenever appropriate, tell your co-workers, neighbors, and friends that we are ALWAYS looking for new Friends.

    • Promoting Events. We host events because we want to meet needs across the community. Help to make sure those who would enjoy or benefit from an event know it is happening.

    • Explaining Fundraising. We support the Lexington Main Branch of the library. Any money raised by FLML is returned to the community through the programming offered at the library. Buying at the Book Sales or the Friends Corner Gift Shop is the same as making a donation, but you get a new-to-you book or unique item. Purchasing tickets to events is a way to support other free events we offer.

What Our Volunteers Say

  • I have been volunteering with the Friends for four years, working with book sale donations once a week. I love seeing people, especially the children, smile when they find something they love to read. I've also met so many interesting people and made a new group of friends.
